The Festival of the First Fruits |
At the end of every year, the eyes of Africa are on the Kingdom of Swaziland...When the new moon brings with it the legendary Festival of the First Fruit. With celebrations and traditions, rich in that unmistakable flair of Africa, "Incwala" is sacred to its people but extravagant for anyone to observe.
Whereas the Incwala or "First Fruit" festival is primarily intended to inaugurate the new harvesting season, it is not its only purpose. The Kingdom of Swaziland is still a monarchy, and Incwala also serves to renew the countrys kingship annually.
For the new harvests to receive the blessings of the ancestors, the people of Swaziland engage in an intricate succession of rites and celebrations, passed down to them from generation to generation for a total of three weeks.
Festivities begin when the new moon rises, this essential part of the celebration is referred to as the "Big Incwala." On this night it is custom, for the people to construct a hallowed bower in the palatial gardens situated in Mbabane.
The very next day the warriors emerge and gather around the bower, clad in impressive traditional garments, where they perform a traditional dance. They do this to entice the King to make an appearance. In turn, the King (who is also dressed elaborately in traditional garb) executes a dance of his own.
Once the enthusiasm reaches its climax, the natives present the king with the first pumpkin that is harvested. When the King has consumed the pumpkin he flings it into the crowd, who hit the roof with wholehearted song and dance.
